Kyle Builds a Dual Xeon Redhat Database box for his home network
Here's what we started with.
He attaches the motherboard:
The next part is mounting the Xeon CPU retention brackets... which is a bit tricky, especially since kyle isn't using a standard Slot 2 (Xeon) case:
Kyle needed 3 more holes on his case, kyle went to a local hardware store and had a very nice man there drill some.
The resulting holes can be seen here with the screws sticking through them:
With the holes drilled the two CPUs can be properly mounted, kyle puts them into the motherboard to insure they fit (he will have to remove them later when sliding this motherboard panel back into his case).
Kyle adds a video card a NIC (only a 10, kyle will need to raid his firewall for a better one later), and 256 Megs of ECC Memory:
With the main work being done, kyle slides the motherboard into his tower case, and begins hooking up the hard drive and power (kyle is wearing a mask because he is allergic to dust, and the case is using has tons of dust):
The computer is now pretty much done. Today he learned that the logistics of hooking up two Xeon CPUs and their heatsinks is a bitch. Tommorrow we will turn it on, see if it boots and then procede to install redhat on it (which he is currently downloading overnight).
